Though the name of Wheaton's character is unknown at this point, Brian Michael Bendis (Executive Producer on the show and co-creator of the
Powers comic book series along with Michael Avon Oeming) describes him as “exciting, mysterious and powerful” in the press release announcing the news. The character will also be introduced in future issues of the
Powers comics.
Powers Season 2 will be adapting the “Who Killed Retro Girl?” storyline from the first volume of the comic book series, which features the Powers Division investigating the murder of the superhero (played by Michelle Forbes) and the “mysteries that her death uncovers.” In addition to Forbes, Wheaton joins cast members Sharlto Copley, Susan Heyward, Tricia Helfer, and Michael Madsen.
As reception to Season 1 was pretty mixed, adapting an existing storyline will hopefully mean the show is able to capture what makes the comic book series so compelling. Due to the
records it set as the most-watched series premiere on the Playstation Network, with any luck the special effects budget will get bolstered, too.
Powers is available to Playstation Plus subscribers for free on the Playstation Store, but episodes can be purchased individually. Season 2 will be available sometime in 2016.
