Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Breakdown
The final trailer for
Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered during halftime of Monday Night Night Football on October 19th, and after gauging the internet reactions today, it certainly did not disappoint. The opening shot displays Rey (Daisy Ridley), possibly the main character, scavenging for parts on a beautifully shot old ship. A few seconds later, Rey looks longingly at a spacecraft rising into flight, reminiscent of how Luke Skywalker was first introduced.
The character of Finn (John Boyega), also carries a look of longing as the next shot cuts to a group of Stormtroopers. Perhaps questioning his existence as one? Darth Vader's dilapidated helmet is displayed as Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), the villain, states in narration that he will fulfill Darth Vader's prophecy. At the end of
Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader killed the emperor and stopped being evil, but only Luke Skywalker witnessed that event. Or did he?
Finally, Ray and Finn meet the aged Han Solo (Harrison Ford), who confidently confirms that the stories they have heard are true. All of them. Han Solo and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) embrace tightly with facial expressions that imply trouble is near. Finally, an unmasked Kylo Ren and Finn are about to duel. We clearly see Finn's look of terror when Kylo Ren reveals his red triple lightsaber. May the force be with him.
There are two items glaringly absent from this trailer. 1.) We really have no idea what the plot is and 2.) No sign of Luke Skywalker. Plot secrecy is one of J.J. Abrams' signatures, but with help from John Williams' immaculate score, he is still able to get his point across that the main characters will enter a journey of hope, change, and sacrifice for the greater good. Also, he's smart enough to save Luke Skywalker for last to keep fans guessing.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens nationwide December 18.
