CBS Confident in Supergirl’s “Broader Audience” Compared to Gotham
"Krypton and Gotham go head to head on the small screen"
With DC properties slowly but surely establishing a firm
monopoly on our nightly television programming -- not that there's anything wrong with that -- it was only a matter of time before certain programs began to butt heads. In classic DC fashion, the battle will pit World's Finest properties against one another -- specifically
Gotham and
Supergirl.
Airing on FOX and CBS, respectively, the two DC shows will share a Monday nighttime slot at 8 PM. Yesterday, at the Television Critics Association press tour, Nina Tassler -- Chairman of
CBS -- spoke out about the issue, feeling that it
bodes well for
Supergirl.
Specifically, Tassler said this:
“Well, I think that they’re different audiences... I think Supergirl has a much bigger, broader audience. It’s more family entertainment. And they look different, they feel different.”
Her remarks are not without some merit; while
Batman has arguably the most popular mythos of any comic book character,
Gotham's dark, and different take on the characters has not been for everyone. On the other hand,
Supergirl appears to capitalize on its light, whimsical tone to draw in young, female audiences -- while still retaining the core audience attracted to the source material.
Raw numbers seem to back this assertion up as well. In terms of promotional materials, the
Supergirl trailer has amassed roughly 3 million more views than the
Gotham trailer, despite the latter being online considerably longer.

Supergirl and
Gotham? Which are you more excited to watch once Fall rolls around? Comment below and tell us what you think!
