Trailer Watch: Stonewall

Director Roland Emmerich is known for tackling big-budget spectacles like Independence Day and 2012. For his next project, he is switching gears and going smaller scale by taking on a historical drama. Stonewall deals with the LGBTQ community in the late '60's and their fight for equal rights. According to Deadline, studio Roadside Attractions has released a first trailer for the upcoming movie. That progress is the result of a painful, 46-years arduous fight that began on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. This hotel was a haven for disenfranchised LGBTQ and was a frequent target for local police officers of the city’s anti-gay enforcers, but after an early morning raid on the 28th, police lost control. A series of spontaneous demonstrations followed, erupting into riots that lasted for several grueling days. In the aftermath, the gay rights movement emerged. The movie deals with an account of the uprising that inserts fictional characters into the drama, the film portrays the community centered around the bar before, during, and after the riots. Stonewall stars Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Match Point), and Joey King (White House Down). Stonewall hits theaters September 25.
