‘Conan the Barbarian’ Director Gets to ‘Hack/Slash’

Last year saw a bevy of terrific female roles in successful features Bridesmaids and The Help, and this weekend will give moviegoers a heavy dose of Gina Carano, star of Steven Soderbergh's Haywire. Should it prove successful, it could open the doors for more female butt-kicking, including the fast-tracking of projects such as Relativity Media's Hack/Slash.
 
Based on the ongoing comic book from Image Comics, Hack/Slash fuses action, horror and a splash of S&M. It focuses on heroine Cassie Hack, who goes from being your typical girl who lives at the end of a generic horror flick to a an avenger looking to kill murderers. Certainly an interesting spin on the slasher genre.
 
The project has been back and forth between different directors and writers, but for the time being, The Hollywood Reporter says Relativity has snagged director Marcus Nispel, who made last year’s reboot of Conan the Barbarian.
 
Nispel was at the helm of the Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes that emerged over the last decade, as well as the 2007 Viking flick Pathfinder: Legend of the Ghost Warrior with star Karl Urban. That in mind, he could be a nice fit for the surprisingly exciting action-horror hybrid.
