2012 Golden Globe Nominations: ‘The Artist’ Tops the List
As is always the case with awards season, the Golden Globe nominees
were announced to several huge surprises and disappointments. The big success story of the morning was The Artist. Michel Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film earned six nominations, one of which was in Motion Picture Musical/Comedy. George Clooney’s political thriller The Ides of March, thought to be dead in the race by many, resurged with four nominations, including in Motion Picture Drama.
The biggest surprise was the complete
lack of nominations for Stephen Daldry’s Extremely
Loud and Incredibly Close. A film that was met with much anticipation, it
didn’t screen until very late this year, which possibly explains its absence
from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s roster.
Another interesting snub came in the Supporting Actress category, where
Melissa McCarthy was ignored for her turn in Bridesmaids despite picking up a Screen Actors Guild Award
nomination yesterday and several other key awards. Her film, however, made the musical/comedy races for
Motion Picture and Actress.
