Today we have lost a sci-fi legend with the announcement that Leonard Nimoy has passed away in his home in Bel-Air, Los Angeles at the age of 83. Nimoy's wife, Susan Bay Nimoy confirmed to
The New York Times his passing from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Nimoy is most famous for starring as Mr. Spock in the
Star Trek franchise, being one of the franchise's most iconic characters, appearing in the series from 1966 to 2013. He was in the original series in the 60s until its cancelation in its third series. He respired the role for
Star Trek: The Motion Picture and continued until the sixth movie "The Undiscovered Country" with Nimoy being in the director's chair for
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and
Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country, which he also had a story credit. He was the only member of the original cast to appear in the J.J. Abrams reboot of
Star Trek.
Outside of the
Star Trek series Nimoy appeared in numerous movies and TV Series, from small roles in shows like
Dragnet,
The Man From U.N.C.L.E and
The Twilight Zone and longer roles in
Mission: Impossible and
Fringe. He film roles include the 1978 version of
Invasion of the Body Snatchers and two different voice roles in the
Transformers franchise.
Nimoy's biggest directing credit outside the
Star Trek franchise was the comedy movie
Three Men and a Baby and outside acting and directing he released five studio albums.
Fun fact, the action Michael Bay is Nimoy's cousin-in-law.
