Happy Birthday PlayStation 3
The PlayStation 3 turned five years old on November 18th. The PlayStation brand struggled through some dark times in the early days of the PS3 launch. The PSP was decimated by the Nintendo DS and the PS3 was a year behind on the Xbox 360, which was just starting to hit its stride. With a staggering price point of $600.00 and a relatively weak launch line up, year one was looking pretty grim. Sales were meager in the first years of the PS3's life. Sony, to their credit, never gave up.
Sony released the Slim, started dropping the price and introduced us to Kevin Butler. Fast forward to 2011, the year everyone said was going to be Sony's. We've seen some great exclusives come out this year like Little Big Planet 2, Uncharted 3, and Infamous 2. Although, the PSN hack really took a lot of wind out of Sony's sails, they have come back looking strong and have closed the gap globally. While Microsoft clearly maintains a solid hold in the North American market, Sony's presence in Europe is growing stronger and helping the PS3 gain on the Xbox 360 in worldwide sales. Happy birthday PS3. I can't wait to get my hands on Twisted Metal and all the other goodies in store for gamers.
