Wet Hot American Summer Making A Netflix Comeback
David Wain’s
Wet Hot American Summer might have failed at box office success when it premiered in 2001, but since then it has become one of the most beloved cult favorites in recent film history, an overlooked classic boasting an incredibly impressive and talented comedic ensemble. After years of hypothetical talks and discussion of a follow-up to the summer camp-set movie, the gang will finally get together for an eight episode limited run on Netfix.
Yes, that means the original cast including Elizabeth Banks, H. Jon Benjamin, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Judah Friedlander, Janeane Garofalo, Nina Hellman, Ken Marino, Zak Orth, David Hyde Pierce, Joe LoTruglio, Christopher Meloni, A.D. Miles, Marguerite Moreau, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Marisa Ryan, Molly Shannon, Michael Showalter and Kevin Sussman will all be reprising their roles in this new iteration, according to Deadline.
David Wain and Michael Showalter, who wrote the original film, will serve as executive producers, additionally Wain will return as director.
Reviving an old favorite is always a risky thing to do, though it capitalizes on the nostalgia and fondness many people may have for the property, it is never easy to capture the quality of the original work. This isn’t the first cult hit to be revived by Netflix, which famously brought back
Arrested Development from TV limbo with a moderate amount of critical success. Whether or not this project will fare better or worse than that is yet to be determined, but with the involvement of the cast and the film’s writers and director, they are off to a promising start.
