The LEGO Movie Sequel Will Have “More Female Characters And Stuff”, Says Directors
"Because a Kitten-Unicorn creature wasn't enough"
Following the domination of the box-office last February, discussions of sequels and spin-offs to
The LEGO Movie hit pretty much immediately following the film's release. Batman's getting a spin-off, a sequel was announced, and word has it that LEGO's nemesis in PlayMobil may even get their own movie. But now, thanks to
a few hints from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller,
who are returning to pen the second movie, we know more about the sequel proper to
one of this year's best movies.
"I don't want to give spoilers," Miller teased. "But there will be more female characters and more female stuff... There's been a real shortage of [female protagonists] in recent years and I think that the near future will be very different."
If it sounds like it plans to completely deviate from the wacky insanity of the first movie, do not be alarmed. Miller and Lord promise the heart and soul of the original will be ever-present in the sequel. The female angle, while at first appearing random, does in fact make sense. [SPOILERS FOR THE LEGO MOVIE FOLLOW] If you remember the original's ending and its reveal the entire movie takes place in the mind of Will Ferrell's character's son, the sort of boy-centric characters - Batman, Metal Beard, Benny - can be reasoned with.
But the movie's final scene hints at a shift in the story when Finn's sister is allowed to play in the LEGO playset of their father's making with him. Could the new movie become the story in the mind of a little girl, instead of Finn? Maybe, or it could be a dual narrative, with each kid adding in their own parts of the story, each fighting over what they think is cool and better than the other's toys.
It will be a while before the speculation ends, unfortunately.
"You would think there would be be more pieces in place but all we've written is 'Fade in..,'" said Lord of the state of the sequel's script.
The LEGO Movie Sequel is set for release sometime in 2018.
