NYCC: Daredevil Netflix Show Panel News

On Saturday at New York Comic Con, there was the first panel ever on Marvel’s 2015 Daredevil Netflix television show, the first of five series that will be shown exclusively on Netflix. Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel Television, led the panel as he brought out the cast of the show onto the stage. Along with showrunner Steven DeKnight, present at the panel were actors playing the roles of henchman Wesley, Leland Owlsley, Ben Ulrich, Vanessa Marianna, along with show stars Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin), and Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil).     Fans at the Daredevil Netflix panel were treated to five different clips of the show, which was the first footage that was shown of the show anywhere. There was a mix of action and drama (and even a little humor) in the clips. Through the clips, it was revealed that Rosario Dawson – who many had speculated would be playing assassin Elektra – would actually be playing Claire Temple, better known as Night Nurse, a character who in the Marvel Universe patches up injured superheroes no questions asked. There was an intense fight scene between Daredevil and Wesley, one of Fisk’s top thugs, shown. Additionally, we saw the first meeting between Wilson Fisk and his future wife, Vanessa, as well as a scene set early in the days of the Nelson & Murdock law office.     Steven DeKnight mentioned that although many comic book stories would inform the Daredevil Netflix series, some of the biggest touchstones would Frank Miller’s 1980's run – particularly his limited series with John Romita Jr. called The Man Without Fear – and the 2000’s run of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Charlie Cox mentioned the same series talking about getting into his character.   The tone of the clips shown was very encouraging – it seemed to be a good balance of character interaction, action, and a slightly darker tone than that of the Marvel movies or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. This fits with the tone of the Daredevil comic book series in many of the best stories. There was no footage or images of the Daredevil costume (Murdock was wearing black clothes and a mask, like early in The Man Without Fear, in the fight scene), although Joe Quesada’s illustration for the show was revealed.
