Star Wars The Complete Saga (Blu-ray) (Release Date 16th Sept.) *Recommendation of the Week*

What’s the Deal?
Star Wars is one of the biggest film franchises ever (it used to be the highest grossing series until Harry Potter overtook it). This fantasy sci-fi adventure saga has provided enjoyment for countless people and has influenced a massive expanded universe of novels, comics, TV series and computer games. Now all six movies are together for the first time in one Blu-ray box-set. Some Star Wars fans are already hostile to this new release because it includes moments like CGI eyes on the Ewoks and Darth Vader shouting no when throwing the Emperor. It already has a low rating on Amazon.com. Despite this negative reaction, many will no doubt love the collection. After all, you're getting six entertaining movies in one boxset.

Under normal circumstances there would have been many contenders for Recommendation of the Week with a number of classic movies being releases: Trainspotting, Citizen Kane and O Brother Where Art Thou. New Releases include the superhero movie Thor and the Oscar nominated Incendies.

Thor (DVD and Blu-ray)

What’s the Deal?
The success of Iron Man showed to the world that lesser known superheroes stories could be turned into successful movies and proved to Marvel they could go ahead with their big project, The Avengers. Thor is Marvel’s version of Norse mythology and this project had a number of writers working on it: Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class), Don Payne (The Simpsons), J. Michael Straczynski (Changeling) and Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend). An ensemble cast is lead by newcomer Chris Hemsworth and includes Tom Hiddleston (Midnight in Paris), Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skargard and Clark Gregg respires his role as agent Phil Coulson from the Iron Man movies. But the biggest surprise of Thor is that the great Shakespearian actor and director Kenneth Branagh took on the directional duties and brought his grand visual style to this new series.

Thor is a great warrior and heir to king of Asgard, Odin (Hopkins). But he is arrogant and after starting a conflict against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, Thor is banished to Earth without his powers. He soon teams up with a intelligent astrophysicist, Jane Foster (Portman) in New Mexico and work together to get his hammer, Mjolnir, back from S.H.I.E.L.D. In Asgard, Thor’s half-brother Loki (Hiddleston) starts to manipulate events so he can seize power.

Star Wars The Original Trilogy (Blu-ray) (Release Date 16th Sept.)

What’s the Deal?
The Original Star Wars Trilogy is considered one of the great film trilogies in history, a bold epic that spans a galaxy, contains memorial characters and filled with universal themes. As a movie Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope has a lot of history behind it: it had a troubled shoot, with actors hating each other, going way over budget and Fox loosing faith in the project. But of course it turned out to be a massive success, cementing the idea of the summer blockbuster and started the work of one of the biggest special effects company, Industrial Light and Magic. The Empire Strikes Back was even better, expanding on the universe and becoming a darker, broody experience and a model how to make a sequel. And Return of the Jedi was a great way to end the series. The series is loved and its success lead to movies like Star Trek: The Motion Picture (ironically Star Wars saved Star Trek) and Moonraker and has been parodied a number of times, including by Family Guy and Robot Chicken. It helped made the careers of Harrison Ford and Warwick Davis and show of James Earl Jones’ abilities. But other actors like Mark Hamill was not as lucky.

Star Wars The Prequel Trilogy (Blu-ray) (Release Date 16th Sept.)

What’s the Deal?
If you prefer the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy over the original trilogy then you are insane and will need psychiatric help. The Prequel Trilogy really upset die hard Star Wars fans to the point of despair and made George Lucas the target for fans’ anger and ridicule. The Prequel Trilogy promised a lot, including the origins of Darth Vader and the expansion of Jedi and Sith culture. The Phantom Menace was one of the most anticipated movies of recent memory, it was the first Star Wars movie for 16 years and George Lucas’ first movie as a director for 22 years. Frank Oz, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels and Ian McDiarmid all reprise their roles and some top actors joined the series, including Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Christopher Lee and Temuera Morrison. A lot of it was ruined by poor dialogue, the over use of CGI, the awful acting of Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen and the less we can say about Jar-Jar Binks the better. But despite all this the Prequels problems, they are still pretty entertaining.
