‘The Imitation Game’ Wins People’s Choice Award at TIFF

This year's TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) saw the premiere of some of the most long awaited film projects of 2014 (some of which we covered here). One of the most important film festivals in the world, TIFF has become a litmus test for prospective Academy Award Nominees. 2014's TIFF has showcased some highly acclaimed films including Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, and Jean-Marc Vallée's Wild, yet Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game came out on top. Featuring the magnetic and talented Benedict Cumberbatch as famed mathematician, Alan Turing, the film showcases one of the most harrowing stories of post-war Britain. Praised for breaking Germany's Enigma Code, Turing was a key instrument in defeating the Germans. A notable loner, and closeted homosexual, Turing was heavily prosecuted for being gay, and was horrifically punished for his "crime." The story alone seems destined for an Academy nod, and with the addition of Cumberbatch's unique skill, the film may have been pushed past the tipping point. Keeping The Imitation Game company at the top, are the previous winners of the People's Choice Award that include: 12 Years a Slave, Silver Linings Playbook, The King's Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, and Hotel Rwanda. While in no way does the award guarantee an Oscar (much less a nomination), The Imitation Game is certainly a film to watch out for when it hits theaters nationwide on November 21st.
