‘Frozen’ Director to Adapt Beloved ‘A Wrinkle in Time’
Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed the Oscar-winning animated feature
Frozen with Chris Buck, has chosen her next project. According to
Variety, Lee will write the big screen adaptation of the cherished children's novel
A Wrinkle in Time, for Disney.
Published in 1962, the book by author Madeleine L’Engle, tells the story of children traveling through time and visiting strange worlds in order to find their missing scientist father. The novel was one of Lee’s favorite novels as a child, and she impressed Disney executives with her take on the project, which emphasizes a strong female-driven narrative and creatively approaches the science fiction and world-building elements of the book.
While Lee adapts
A Wrinkle in Time, she will stay on in her role at Disney, as part of their animation's story trust and remain active in projects in development for the division, which led
Frozen to be the biggest animated hit for the studio grossing nearly $1.3 billion worldwide. Lee is also involved with their upcoming animated feature
Big Hero 6, a Marvel property, due Nov. 7, 2014.
There is no director yet attached to
A Wrinkle in Time. Jeff Stockwell (
Bridge to Terabithia) had previously began writing a screenplay when the project was first announced in 2010.
A Wrinkle in Time is the first book in L’Engle’s
Time Quartet series, which also includes
A Wind in the Door,
Many Waters, and
A Swiftly Tilting Planet.
