The Best News of SDCC 2014

So unless you haven't got an Internet connection -- wait, how are you reading this? -- you know that we're coming out of San Diego's International Comic Con, the mecca of all things pop culture.   True, the con's scope has expanded from just the comic book world, but comic book news still reigns supreme. So because I care so very much, I've compiled what I believe to be the best news to come out of this year's comic cons.   [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="507"] This is, of course, number one[/caption]

Josh Brolin is Definitely Thanos, You Guys

Thanos, the looming threat on most of the MCU, is going to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy as a set up for the larger, grander conflict that is the Infinity Gauntlet. Which, probably, will be the plot of Avengers 3. For something with that kind of importance, you'd need an actor with authority, with gravitas, someone who can be intimidating as all hell when he needs to.   It was rumored for a while that Josh Brolin would be The Mad Titan, and it seemed like a perfect fit. Outside of a killer Tommy Lee Jones impression, Brolin has proven himself to be a flexible and commanding actor. Despite all it's flaws he was still the best part of Johna Hex.     However, at this year's con Marvel revealed that Brolin had signed a multipicture deal with Marvel and that he'd voiced Thanos in Guardians, but he also preformed the motion capture for it.   We'll have to wait to see how he does in Guardians, but I'm more than excited to see him go head to head with the rest of the MCU.

Wonder Woman

Since we're coming up on the movie adaptation of the ground breaking Supreme Court case Batman V Superman, it was only natural that Warner Bros. premiere a bunch of new material.   Included in that material was the first look at Wonder Woman. Here it is:   [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="469"] Brown![/caption]   In all honesty, this is probably as close as we're going to get to the comics for now. It's been appropriately grittied up for Snyder oh so gritty world.   There's only a few things I have issue with. The heels for one, I mean her comic book costume has boots anyway, why change it to something so impractical. Also the muted color? I don't know, it'll probably be changed in the movie, but it seems too leathery.   However, this is better than I expected, so I consider it good news.

This Leaked Footage

In case you didn't get to see it, here's what we're looking at. On a Gotham rooftop at night, in the middle of a downpour, we see Batman in armor straight out of The Dark Knight Returns tear a tarp of the bat signal. He flips the switch and uses it to search the sky. He find Superman hovering above him and Supes' eye begin to glow red with heat vision. That's it. Short and sweet.     I'm not that excited for this movie, so why do I consider this good news? Look how comic booky it is. Sure, it's through a layer of unnecessary grit, but we've got a power armored batman with glowing white eyes and hovering, intimidating Superman. It's a really good sign! It's actually got me a little excited for this, I'd like to see how far they take it.

James Gunn will Write and Direct Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Outside of Joss Whedon, Marvel doesn't have a lot of repeat directors. I was worried it could be the same way with Guardians of the Galaxy and we'd see someone else helm the sequel.   I was worried because it's such a hard story to get right and such a specific tone to accomplish that I think only very few writer/directors could nail it. Without seeing the film, I think Gunn did it.     In addition, it shows a level of confidence on Marvel's part about Gunn's work. Which is a good sign for the upcoming movie. All in all, I think it's a great piece of news.   BUT what do you think? What was your favorite news coming out of SDCC? Let me know in the comments below.
