Director Rupert Sanders attached to Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell

Anime has yet to be successfully adapted into a live action feature film, in Hollywood at least. From Akira to Cowboy Bebop, there have been a myriad of properties that have been in development hell, never to become fully realized. There's now another property to be added to that list, Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell, to be helmed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman).  Deadline reports that the film will be headed up by Dreamworks, with producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul attached. The latest version of the script was crafted by William Wheeler (Hoax, The Reluctant Fundamentalist), which has been in Dreamworks' hands since 1998. The cyberpunk manga follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a member of Section 9, a division of the Japanese Police force, that handles terrorist threats, in both real life and in cyberspace. Ghost in the Shell has already been adapted into multiple feature films, by Mamoru Oshii and a TV series, Stand Alone Complex by Kenji Kamiyama.
