Casting for Len Wiseman's upcoming remake of Total Recall keeps picking up steam. First Colin Farrell takes the role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Then Bryan Cranston gets tapped to play the lead villain
while Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel will play the female leads.
Now, the Heat Vision blog of The Hollywood Reporter says that Bill
Nighy--who has worked with Wiseman on two "Underworld" films — has been
cast as Quatto.
The
outline of the reboot has proven to be less like a direct adaptation of the 1990
original. Doug Quaid (Farrell) believes himself to be a secret agent in a
world split by two nations—Euromerica and New
Shanghai. The issue is that he cannot remember who he is an agent
for. Cranston will play the leader of Euromerica, who secretly plots a
massive invasion against New Shanghai, Quaid’s apparent home. Quatto
(Nighy) is described as the leader of the resistance (presumably)
against Cranston's regime, though it does not specify his country of
origin. For all intents and purposes, it sounds like the Martian
storyline of the 1990 film has been scrapped.
