It’s that time again, folks: Player Affinity's Sports Movie Madness! Last week concluded round two of voting for you to determine the best sports movies ever. Votes were cast and tears were shed, and we've got your results, as well as the Screen 16 matchup that will determine the Boxing Region Championship.
But first for those newbie’s out there, let's recap the tournament. In the
Sports Movie Madness tournament, there are seven sports and one mega-category
of miscellaneous sports, so eight regions total. This is the Boxing Region
Championship. Your task is simple: to pick which movie you deem worthy of being
the best football film, the one that will compete against the other sports to
determine the best sports film ever. Simply enter a comment by Sunday,
April 3 at 5:00 pm with the movie you think should win the
Championship and your vote counts! The boxing winner here will square off again
the sure-to-be mighty champion of the Football Region.
THE RESULTS
1
Rocky def. 4 The Fighter
2 Million Dollar Baby def. 3 Raging Bull
A near upset and a massive upset rocking the boxing community last week,
thought the turnout was a tad slighter than our previous rounds so do your duty
as a film fan and cast those votes! But I digress. The result from the last
round produced a slim win for Rocky
over the new kid on the block, The
Fighter by a single vote. If you’re looking back and say, but wait that
doesn’t add up, it’s because my votes aren’t displayed there. In shocking
upset, girl defeated beast as Million
Dollar Baby handily took down Raging
Bull, a film constantly hailed as an undisputed masterpiece. Now, whoever wins will face the task
of fending off the Football (Soccer) Region champion for the ultimate title.
***BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP***
1 Rocky vs. 2 Million
Dollar Baby
The Italian Stallion continues his Cinderella story as he slips into the final round. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Rocky (the film as well as the character) simply carry with them a spirit and hopefulness that is infectious. Though it faces a tough challenger with Clint Eastwood’s sombre drama, if history has taught us anything, never count this movie down and out.
Another challenger, another best picture winner and this one seems to be picking up momentum. Considered to be Eastwood’s last masterpiece before his films began gathering slightly less favourable reviews, Million Dollar Baby with its feisty female lead and a whole lot of built up love could easily pull an upset in this final round.
