Earlier this week Bethesda announced that Prey 2 was set for release in 2012, and that development was being handled by the original team at Human Head Studios. It was also revealed that the game game would not utilize the id Tech 5 engine, which is still under heavy construction. Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks explained that IT5 was not an option for Prey 2 because work would not be complete by the time the engine made it's debut in id Software's latest title, RAGE. Instead, the game is described as using “cutting-edge” id technology by its developers at Human Head. No details on this mystery engine have been unveiled, but one possibility is that id Software is leasing a specially-designed game engine that has been specifically tailored to Prey 2. There is also the chance that the game will be using a more dated technology that has been reworked and upgraded.
When the game was first announced in 2008 it was still under the control of 3D realms and the Radar Group, but in 2009 Bethesda acquired the franchise and the original developers are exited to be working with their new publisher. Chris Rhinehart, project lead of Prey 2, stated that the game “will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world.” He also reports that the team is exited to show gamers what they have been working on and hopes that they will share the same enthusiasm toward this sequel. So far no other information has been released on the game's storyline or mechanics, but it is speculated that some credible media may start to surface in the next few months.
