***UPDATE: A statement has been issued by IMAX correcting its statement to indicate that part one of The Hobbit will in fact be released in 2012.
Warner Bros. and IMAX Corp. just inked a 20-picture deal to put WB films on IMAX screens through 2013. A joint press release listed The Hobbit as having a 2013 release date, so that confirms the near-certain rumors that "Hobbit" would not meet its projected December 2011 release. Looks like you'll have to deal with more Hobbit rumors for a couple of years, but take solace, fellow movie geek, "Batman 3" was on this list. Here's the exact language of the press release:
"Under the agreement, Warner Bros. movies that will be released in IMAX are: Legends of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga'Hoole 3D (September 24, 2010); Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (3D) (November 19, 2010); Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (3D) (July 15, 2011); Happy Feet 2 (3D) (November 18, 2011); and The Hobbit (December 2013). Warner Bros. and IMAX also plan to release an additional 15 films over the course of 2011, 2012 and 2013, including Gravity, Dark Shadows, Fury Road, Batman 3, and Superman."
Okay, okay, okay. Let's hold our horses on Superman just now. Everyone knows the Superman franchises is floating around in DC Comics purgatory. If anything, my guess is that it would hit summer 2013, but does this mean some scripts are being looked at and some wheels are in motion? I doubt WB and IMAX execs were just sitting around and being like "eh, just throw Superman in there ... yeah, yeah, Superman's good ..." At least "Batman 3" is believable. I would hope this means that sometime over the next six months we'll get some solid news about a production schedule for Christopher Nolan's next Batman romp, which could fit into a nice summer 2012 slot which currently includes The Avengers. Of course, WB has some time to set its tent poles for 2012 and 2013.
The obvious film missing from this list is The Green Lantern, which is due June 2011, which shouldn't have an impact on "Deathly Hallows Pt. 2" I would assume, seeing as they're about one month apart. I would imagine it was just an oversight, but who knows. There was also no mention of The Hobbit being in two parts, so no idea as to whether this is Part 1 only that they're talking about.
