The film commonly called “the Alien prequel” now has a name: Prometheus. According to Deadline, however, this will be “more original” than just your average, run-of-the-mill prequel churned out for a quick buck. This upcoming epic is currently set for release across the globe on March 9, 2012, and will mark director Ridley Scott’s long-awaited return to science-fiction since 1982’s Blade Runner.
Prometheus relates to the mythological titan who brought man fire and is also Ancient Greek for “forethought.” Considering Scott’s filmography and dedication to craft, it's likely that he didn’t pick the word out of thin air. Unfortunately, we don’t know what the reason behind the title is just yet.
Damon Lindelof, who worked on TV’s Lost and the 2009 adaptation of Star Trek, collaborated with Scott to push the Alien universe into new directions. Lindelof is ecstatic to be working with Scott and says that his vision is truly original:
"In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie. It's daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true."
Noomi Rapace of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fame has nabbed the leading role of Elizabeth Shaw, while Academy Award winners Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are being considered for the character of Vickers, another lead.
Both actresses have proven through their respectable careers – we’ll forgive Jolie for The Tourist and Theron for Aeon Flux – to be exceptional and versatile talents on screen. They can make us laugh until our sides hurt, and they can also turn on the waterworks at the drop of a hat. However, they can also kick some serious tail, which is obviously more important here than comedy or drama.
In the end, though, it feels like Theron is more appropriate for this role. Who do you think is a better choice to play Vickers, and how does everyone feel about Noomi Rapace? Is she a future Hollywood star?
