Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released as a challenge to the hugely popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, keeping its unique Battlefield teamwork and coordination celebrated in previous titles in the series but introducing gameplay on a smaller and more directed scale. Streamlined to a degree, with smaller maps and more limited objectives, the latest BF title allowed for greater detail and interaction with the environment and opened up new strategies and tactics that were absent in larger and more empty landscapes. Basically acting as almost a reboot to the series via gameplay and graphics, it comes as no surprise that, like BF1942 before it, BF: BC2 has in the works a Vietnam expansion that is sure to impress.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam is a multiplayer-only expansion that introduces new features and many old ones. The familiar Rush and Conquest game modes return to continually encourage targeted and cooperative squad-based teamwork in the taking of objectives. BF: BC2: V will once again give players the chance to take control of a soldier representing either the US Marines or the North Vietnamese Army to battle over 4 original maps set in 1960s and 1970s Vietnam, including locales like Phu Bai Valley and the desperate Hill 137. Immersion has been an important aspect of the new creations, as new voiceovers have been recorded to emulate authentic chatter amongst and between the opposing factions. Foxholes, VC tunnels and jungle are present from which players and hide and then ambush at their leisure.
As was the case in the original Battlefield: Vietnam, popular music of the era has been implemented in-game, although rather than individual songs to listen to, 8 radio stations have been included that contain 2 hours worth of music over 49 different tracks. These songs run the gamut, ranging from the emblematic “Ride of the Valkyries” to “Fortunate Son”.There are 15 new weapons to suit your fancy, including such favorites like the M79 grenade launcher and a XM22 machine gun. Six Russian and US vehicles of the era will be included, with smaller helicopters like the Huey making an appearance and (finally) fixed wing aircraft like the F-4 Phantom arriving to scorch the earth. Persistent statistics and character levels remain, but new types of awards, unlocks and achievements have been crafted to suit the new realities that Vietnam brings.
With over 5 million units sold, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has shown itself to be a fun and entertaining game with depth. Vietnam can only add to that legacy of quality. BF: BC2: V is set to be released in the last quarter of 2010 on Xbox360, Playstation 3 and PC. It will only be available in digital download format through each system’s online market services (Xbox Live for 1200pts, PSN Store, and through Steam for PC). The price point will be set at $14.99USD. This content-heavy expansion sounds like a blast, so keep your eye on it!
