Backlash from it's disastrous 3-D run aside, the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans was considered a box-office success and has since moved forward with the sequel treatment, the aptly (and very original) titled “Clash of the Titans 2.” Now, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have finally secured a director in Jonathan Liebesman, director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles).
The Hollywood Reporter has it that Warner Bros. is looking to rectify the issues many had with the first “Clash,” notably in the area of 3D. With the first “Clash” being converted to 3D rather than shot in 3D, the overall effect came off poorly to most audiences -- to say the least. Warner Bros. is now making it well-documented that “Clash 2” will be shot in 3D, rather than face the conversion process once more.
Another area the first “Clash” fell against was its script. Many critics gave negative reviews to the story provided (in comparison to the original 1981 film). Warner Bros. has since brought on several of its core writers to develop the sequel. Such writers include Greg Berlanti (next summer's Green Lantern) and David Leslie Johnson (upcoming Red Riding Hood).
After a summer-long negotiation process, Liebsman secured the job once Warner Bros. saw footage of “Los Angeles,” a film described as a Black Hawk Down film in which aliens attack Los Angeles. Recent screenings of footage at venues such as Comic Con have only brought further acclaim to Liebsman's ability to handle big effects and scale, which are vital if Warner Bros. wants to create a successful and more substantive sequel.
As for actors, while not confirmed, Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) are expected to return.
