News on the street in the League of Legends front is that Riot Games President Marc Merrill's twitter account was taken over yesterday by a hacker going only by the name "Jason." The individual leaked of a Riot-developed card game, which first surfaced in the form of an image of a login screen for a game called League of Legends: Supremacy -- a name which Riot has trademarked. The hacker then tried to explain that the game was a standalone product and was "fully completed, but never released," and then threatened to upload "all the images" of the game, "including the card images."
The hacker also threatened that he would release even more details "Unless Marc Merrill emails me not to." Merrill has since regained control of his Twitter account and deleted the hacker's tweets. Other images the hacker had uploaded to imgur have also been removed.
Merill sent a tweet out last night saying, "Yup, someone got onto my Twitter account. Yup, someone shared some old screens from one of the many prototypes we've experimented with." That tweet was followed up by another saying "We're always working on a variety of new ideas for League & beyond. Lots of experimentation that may never see the light of day."
I'm a League of Legends player and although the card game may be a bold move I don't think it would be a good one, unless it was targeting the mobile device market. Hearthstone has been released to little success and unless that also jumps onto iOS and Android I don't see it being a big hit. It seems that this game was only a "prototype" and depending on the success of the fully released Hearthstone from Blizzard, Riot games may change their mind and release a game that may never have seen the light of day.
