Man of Steel is opening in theaters this Friday and the reviews that are coming in are mostly positive. The box office projections are over $100 Million for the opening weekend and Warner Brothers want to capitalize, so they are fast-tracking a sequel.
Deadline reports director Zack Snyder and writer David S. Goyer are set to return for the sequel as the studio wants to ensure continuity for the series. A big question is how much involved will producer Christopher Nolan have? It is likely he will have a reduced role due to his directing duties for Interstellar.
Currently Goyer has a three movie deal with Warner Brothers to write the Man of Steel movie and the Justice League movie which is set for a 2015 release date. But Snyder’s involved with the Man of Steel sequel will likely end speculation that he would direct Justice League.
This is not the first time that a sequel for movie is commissioned before the release date and it seems to be the new practice for Blockbuster filmmaking. In recent years movies like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Fast and Furious 6 and Oz: The Great and Powerful having sequels commissioned very quickly. Even After Earth was seen as a possible multi-platform franchise.
