Comedy Central has announced the cancellation of the animated series Futurama, but don’t panic just yet. The producers are exploring possible options to find a new network for the program, but no concrete plans have yet been made or announced. As creator Matt Groening tells EW, “We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out…I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”
Of course, Futurama has been saved from cancellation nation once before; after being bumped off the FOX line up back in 2003, the show enjoyed a Family Guy-esque revival while re-running on Adult Swim. Comedy Central came in and rescued the show from late night reruns and gave it a new home, airing new episodes starting in 2008. While garnering critical acclaim, the ratings have seen a considerable decline, which lead the network to pull the plug. There are still thirteen episodes set to air in order to complete the show's seventh and final season. These new episodes will begin airing on June 19 and the season will conclude on September 4th at 10 pm.
